  • ORIENTATION OF FRESH STUDENTS.

When students gain admission into the universities, they go through the screening process and when they are fully registered, the University organizes an orientation programme for them through the Student Affairs Department.

During the orientation exercise, various officers of the University give the fresh Students lectures on various topics to help them to be well equipped to face academic and social life on Campus. The Vice-Chancellor and other Principal officers address the students during the orientation.

Topics bordering on the underlisted headings are normally presented to the students: –

  • Administrative Issues/Channels of Communication in the University, Financial Guidelines for Students, Proper and Effective Use of the Library, Student Affairs Department, Safety Department: Issues and Challenges, Accessing Medical Services in the University, General studies in the University System, the place of ICT in the 21st Century Learning, Entrepreneurship and Wealth Creation, Ethics and Moral on Campus, Relationship Issues: Challenges and Management among Undergraduates, Course Credit System in the University, Dress Code, etc.

The University devotes three (3) days for this orientation programme to show the importance attached to it and to help the students to avoid any pitfalls in the course of their stay in the University.

  • HOSTEL MANAGEMENT.

The University hostels are managed by the Hostel Management Committee under the chairmanship of the Dean, Student Affairs. Other members of the Committee include: The Sub-deans, DR Hostel Management, Coordinator, Student Work-Aid Programme, Chairman, Student Welfare Committee, SUG president and Registry staff as secretary to the Committee.

  • PROCESSING OF STUDENTS FOR NYSC.

The Student Affairs Department processes the students on graduation for NYSC. As earlier mentioned, one of the three major units of the Department is the NYSC Unit with some Sub-Units. Their functions had earlier been listed in sections 7A and 7B.

For efficient mobilization exercise, students are informed during orientation on the need to start early to use correct data about themselves. They should only use the names on JAMB Admission letters for their documentation, examinations etc. These are also the names in the JAMB Portal which will be used for mobilizing them for National Youth Service. The Student Affairs Department also gives prospective corps members (Final Year Students) pre-mobilization briefing in conjunction with the NYSC for effective mobilization.

The Student Affairs Department is very efficient in mobilization of the students and the University does not have backlog and issues concerning NYSC as the Management of the University approves steadily for regular workshops of the concerned staff for them to be abreast of all new decisions of the NYSC and also implement same.

The Student Affairs Department also handles regular stakeholders’ meetings to enable concerned staff to do the needful for effective mobilization.

  • SUPERVISION OF ASSOCIATIONS/CLUBS.

Social-Cultural and religious organizations exist on campus. The organizations are registered after fulfilling the necessary conditions. Membership of student organizations is open to all students irrespective of sex, race, ethnic group and religion. The organizations are assisted in several ways to help them meet their noble objectives through guidance and supervision. Non-registered organizations are banned in the campus. No student shall participate in or be a member of any clandestine organization. The consequences of participation in any activity of such organizations are severe and include summarily expulsion from the University. Students are advised to check with the Student Affairs Department for registered organizations.

  • SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT (SUG).

In Nnamdi Azikiwe University, there is vibrant student unionism. Students are allowed to freely choose their leaders without interference from the University Management. The election is usually free, fair and peaceful, and has been acclaimed by all students as a model for others to emulate.

An electoral committee (UNECO) headed by the Dean, Student Affairs sees to the election and swearing-in of successful office holders in the Student Union Government.

Before elections are held, usually during the First Semester any bans on politics and political activities are usually lifted to set the ball rolling for the elections. During the period, forms for various offices in the SUG are made available.

The Student Union Government (SUG) in the University has three (3) arms. The Executive (EXCO), Students’ Representative council (SRC) and Students’ Judicial Council (SJC). These arms are headed by the President, Speaker and Chief Judge respectively.

  • PROTECTION OF RIGHT OF STUDENTS.

The Student Affairs Department is committed to sensitization of the students on the existing regulations and advocating for them as and when necessary. The Department has zero tolerance for intimidation of staff against students or students against one another.

The Student Affairs Department attends to various students in distress both day and night within and outside the university environs. The Students have easy access to Student Affairs Officials who will attend to them immediately they call on these numbers. 080106085860, 08090784390. By so doing most of them encountering cases of cultism, sexual harassments, intimidation by landlords, bullying by fellow students, rapes, emotional/psychological problems, etc. are promptly responded to and appropriate actions taken.

 

  • SCHOLARSHIP MATTERS

The Student Affairs Department handles the scholarship matters of the students of the University.

 

  • STUDENTS DISCIPLINE

As the motto of this University implies, discipline is a sine qua non for graduation. There is in place a Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC) where offenders are allowed a fair hearing on any allegation. Cases bordering on disciplinary matter are referred to the SDC.

Every registered student should have an identity card issued by the Registrar. Students are advised to always be in possession of their identity cards before they are allowed to sit for any examination in the University.

 

  • HEALTH AND WELFARE

The Student Affairs Department liaises with the University Medical Centre to ensure that students’ health and well being are given prominent attention. The University Medical Centre is properly placed to provide primary health care to students. Sickbays are provided at the hostels with medical doctors and nurses attached in order to give any ailing student immediate attention.
