Professor of Nutritional & Environmental Biochemistry

Professor Kingsley Ikechukwu Ubaoji is a distinguished academic, accomplished administrator, and seasoned leader currently serving as the Dean of Students’ Affairs at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. A Professor of Nutritional and Environmental Biochemistry in the Department of Applied Biochemistry, he brings to the role a wealth of experience spanning teaching, research, mentorship, and student-centered administration.

With a strong academic foundation entirely built at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, where he earned his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Professor Ubaoji further enhanced his professional competence with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna. His academic journey reflects a deep commitment to excellence, continuous learning, and impactful scholarship.

Professor Ubaoji’s professional outlook is further enriched by extensive international training and exposure. He has participated in high-level leadership and professional development programmes across South Africa, The Netherlands, and Thailand, where he gained advanced insights into nutrition leadership, sustainable development, environmental management, and collaborative governance. These global experiences have significantly shaped his multidisciplinary approach to teaching, research, and administration, equipping him with the capacity to implement best practices and innovative strategies within the University system.

Professor Ubaoji’s career progression within the University is marked by dedication and distinction, rising through the ranks from Assistant Lecturer to full Professor. Over the years, he has demonstrated exceptional teaching ability, guiding numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students while supervising research at both Master’s and Ph.D. levels. His scholarly contributions include an extensive portfolio of journal publications, book chapters, and collaborative research efforts, particularly in areas such as environmental health, nutrition, biochemical toxicology, and molecular biology.

Beyond the classroom and laboratory, Professor Ubaoji has played significant roles in university governance and administration. He has served as Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor on Academic Matters, a member of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee, and held various leadership positions within academic and non-academic committees. His extensive involvement in student-related committees uniquely positions him to understand and address student needs effectively.

A respected figure in both academic and community circles, he has participated in international collaborations and professional networks, including projects linked with global institutions and organizations such as the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). He is also a member of several professional bodies, including the Nutrition Society of Nigeria and the Nigerian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Professor Ubaoji’s leadership philosophy is rooted in service, discipline, and holistic student development. Known for his strong interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and commitment to student welfare, he continues to drive initiatives that enhance student engagement, welfare services, and institutional harmony.

Roles, Responsibilities & Areas of Oversight

The Office of the Dean provides overall leadership and strategic direction for Students’ Affairs and ensures effective coordination of all student-related services. Key responsibilities include:

  • Overall supervision of students’welfare and support systems
  • Oversight of accommodation and hostel administration
  • Coordination of students’activities, organizations, and engagement programmes
  • Monitoring discipline and students’conduct within the University
  • Oversight of Students’Union Government (SUG) relations and governance
  • Policy direction and implementation of student-focused initiatives

The Dean works in close collaboration with the Associate Dean and Sub-Deans, ensuring coordinated leadership, shared responsibility, and effective delivery of all students’ affairs services across different functional areas.

 

Key Innovations:

  • Digital Students’Support & Communication System
    Implementation of structured online platforms on the Students’ Affairs website that enable students to submit complaints, report welfare concerns, and request academic or hostel-related support. This system ensures that all students’ issues are directly received, properly documented, and promptly addressed, improving accessibility, responsiveness, and service delivery.
  • Clubs & Student Engagement Platform
    Introduction of a dedicated “Clubs” feature on the website to streamline the registration and coordination of students’ This platform allows students to easily form or joinclubs and associations, thereby promoting active participation, leadership development, and enhanced students’ engagement on campus.
